What is coaching?

Coaching is a professional relationship with emphasis on self-directing an individual or team to help them fulfill the gaps between where they are now and where they want to be.  It is a partnership between coach and client to help the client clarify and focus their goals to achieve the outcome they desire.

How is coaching different?

Consultants – Consultants will look at your goal and tell you what the problem is.  Once they tell you what the problem is, they will tell you what you need to do.  Coaching helps the client focus on coming up with the solution that fits specifically with their desired approach and implementation.  There is not one solution for all.  In many cases, our extensive business experience allows us to use consulting in combination with coaching to come up with the optimal solution for your organizational dynamic.

Mentors – Mentors look at their own specific experience and try to apply it to a similar situation in a general way.  They normally will suggest “what they would do” based on something that has worked in the past.  Coaching recognizes the possibility that what has worked in the past may not work today.  The coach relies on the insights and knowledge of the client and what they are experiencing.  The coach may help validate what a mentor or consultant is suggesting.
